Service Corporation International began in 1962 as one family-owned funeral home in Houston. Its founder, Robert L. Waltrip, was a third-generation licensed funeral director whose father owned Heights Funeral Home, and his plan was to run funeral homes with streamlined operations and lower overhead, then carry that model to other markets through acquisitions. Decades of buying, Stewart Enterprises and the Neptune Society among them, built a network of more than 1,900 funeral home, cemetery, and crematory locations across 44 states, the District of Columbia, and eight Canadian provinces. Its locations operate under brands that include Dignity Memorial, Funeraria Del Angel, and Rose Hills.
SCI hires the licensed core of funeral service: funeral directors, embalmers, and combined director-embalmers at local funeral homes, plus advance-planning directors who arrange services before they're needed. If you're still in mortuary school, its scholarship program backs 25 mortuary science students a year.
